How to upgrade the PrinterOn Enterprise Solution from version 2.x to 4.x - c07721405
PrinterOn Enterprise 4.x can only work on a Windows machine with Windows 2012R2 or later, if your current release of PrinterOn Enterprise is on an older version of Windows, the recommendation is to go directly to Option #2 below.
Option 1: In-place Upgrade (Only complete this step if the software is installed on Windows Server 2012 R2 or later)
- Make a backup of the PrinterOn server configurations (this is a manual process, write down the information or save them in a configuration file). Or take a snapshot of the virtual machine hosting the PrinterOn Enterprise solution.
- Install the latest release of the 2.x which is 2.5 (Contact PrinterOn Support for access to the latest release of version 2.5).
- Complete the installation then restart the machine.
- Once the machine has been restarted, validate that the latest release of 2.5 works as expected with sample print jobs.
- Login to the PrinterOn.com web administration portal, then select Manage Licenses .
- Select Download to download the latest release of the licenses file that will be used to complete the upgrade to version 3.x.
- Download PrinterOn Enterprise version 3.x from the PrinterOn.com website.
- Run the installer, select the newly downloaded licenses file and complete the upgrade to PrinterOn version 3.x.
- Restart the machine to complete the changes and finalize the installation.

Launch the
PrinterOn
Configuration Manager (new component within the
PrinterOn
Enterprise 3.x and 4.x).
Login with the following details- username: root
- password: APISiteAuth (this value is included in the licenses file and below the [Site] section
- Confirm the printer details are appearing properly by navigating to the Printers tab.
- Navigate to the web print page, typically by going to (https://127.0.0.1) on the machine hosting the PrinterOn Enterprise solution.
- Submit sample test print jobs to ensure everything is working as expected after the upgrade to PrinterOn Enterprise version 3.x.
- Download PrinterOn Enterprise version 4.x from the PrinterOn.com website.
- Run the installer, which should notify that it will upgrade the current installation of PrinterOn Enterprise.
- Restart the machine to finalize the installation.
- Launch the PrinterOn Configuration Manager.
- Login with the previously configured details.
- Confirm the printer details are appearing properly by navigating to the Printers tab.
- Launch the web print page, typically by going to (https://127.0.0.1) on the machine hosting the PrinterOn Enterprise solution.
- Submit sample test print jobs to ensure everything is working as expected after the upgrade to PrinterOn Enterprise version 4.x.
- If authentication was previously enabled, confirm this is working as before.
- If the authentication details are missing, please populate them again from the configurations that were previously written down or stored in the configuration file made before starting the upgrade process
Option 2: New Installation (Must be completed on Windows server 2012 R2 or later)
- Create a new machine to host the new PrinterOn Enterprise solution version 4.x.
- Login to the PrinterOn.com web administration portal, then select Manage Licenses .
- Select Download to download the latest release of the licenses file that will be used to install PrinterOn Enterprise 4.x
- Download PrinterOn Enterprise version 4.x from the PrinterOn.com website.
- Open the licenses file and navigate to the bottom below the [Config] section.
- Confirm that the ServiceURL value has the correct server IP address or DNS name (if the URL is incorrect please type in the correct server address, keep in mind this address must be configured with https).
- Save the changes to the licenses file. if any were made.
- Complete all Microsoft Windows updates and any required software before attempting to install the PrinterOn Enterprise solution.
- Login to the machine as the service account that will be used to run the PrinterOn Enterprise solution services. PrinterOn support recommends a service account that has local administrative rights on the machine with a password that does not expire.
- Run the installation file for PrinterOn Enterprise version 4.x.
- Select the newly downloaded licenses file.

Choose the Installation Type:
- If using the SQL Express included with the PrinterOn Enterprise solution, then select Standard .
- If using a remote SQL server (a SQL server that already exists within the organization) then select Custom .
- Complete the installation wizard.
- Restart the machine to commit the changes.
- With version 4.x the PrinterOn Configuration Manager link appears on the desktop after the reboot (this is a new component).
- Launch the PrinterOn Configuration Manager.
- Open the licenses file that was previously downloaded from the PrinterOn.com website.

Login with the default values:
- username: root
- password: APISiteAuth (this value is included in the licenses file and in the [Site] section
- Once authenticated, a new password will be requested (8 characters minimum, uppercase, lowercase, numbers and special characters required).
- Confirm that the Printers tab is accessible and that no errors appear.
- The installation has now been completed successfully, continue with the next steps or re-configuring authentication.
NOTE:
Applies to PrinterOn Enterprise 2.x, 3.x. and 4.x. PrinterOn Enterprise 3.x and 4.x now require the use of a local database, the software is packaged with Microsoft SQL Server Express edition. If you don't want to use the packaged version of the SQL Server, the installer allows you to make use of a Standard SQL Server that might already exists within the environment.
